If the cold Canadian air continues to collide with the gulf moisture the way it has this winter, anything is possible. Well, maybe not hosting the Winter Olympics. But so far, we have seen a lot of inclement weather in the Commonwealth and its effect on our churches, their ministries, and services.
Some congregations have already missed four Sunday services this winter, not to mention weekly activities. What inclement weather plans and provisions does your church have in place? Certainly you can post your cancellations on local TV, radio, and answering machines, but some churches are seeking creative alternatives.
- What about a Sunday afternoon worship service when the temperatures are warmer for road, parking lot, and sidewalk conditions?
- What about conducting your “Sunday” worship service during your mid-week gathering?
- If you are really innovative, you could have an online worship service or have the pastor Skype a live message to the congregation through home computers.
- Speaking of computers, online giving is becoming a big advantage for churches, especially when church members are not able to attend regularly. Some people choose this option or give by automatic bank drafts as a systematic way of giving their tithes and offerings no matter the weather conditions. Of course, many of us will rely on the catch-up method by simply reminding the congregation to make up for the last Sunday missed.
Inclement weather is likely, especially this winter! Will your church be prepared?
