“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:37-38).
In Matthew 9:36, Jesus gives us a portrait of those who are lost and without Christ as theirSavior. He says that they are “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Jesus feels their suffering, realizes their separation and is moved with compassion. He then goes onto make an appeal to His followers to share in His compassion and pray earnestly.
What do you think would happen if we earnestly prayed this prayer today? I believe that if we were earnest in praying for God to send laborers, because of our compassion for the lost, that we might find ourselves being the answer to our own prayer. In Matthew chapter 10, the very ones that Jesus commanded in chapter. 9 to pray earnestly for laborers in the harvest, are the ones that Jesus sends out to labor in the harvest. Like Jesus, may we see the size of the harvest, feel their suffering, and realize their separation and go.
