Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not set his mind on what is false, and who has not sworn deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
Psalm 24:3-6
Did you know that Moses was more than 80 years old when he climbed mount Sinai to receive the ten commandments? I’m not sure I could climb a mountain today and I’m not even close to 80 years old! Facing spiritual mountains can sometimes be daunting since it seems there is no way to prepare.
When my youngest daughter Michaela was little, she would climb up on the sofa right next to her grampa and snuggle up to tell him about the important things in her life. She loved her grampa and wanted to share everything with him! One by one she brought her stuffed animals, toys, clothes, shoes, and games and placed them next to him. When it was time to sit down again, there was little room left, so she squeezed into the tiny space at the far end of the couch. However, without her grampa’s presence nearby, she soon started playing with all her wonderful treasures until they completely engulfed her attention. Grampa hadn’t moved but he was so far away from his precious granddaughter she could no longer feel the warmth of his arm around her or hear the whisper of his voice.
Our Heavenly Father is much like Michaela’s grandpa; He is sitting on His throne longing for a relationship with us. He talks to us through His word and the Holy Spirit; and listens to us speaking to Him, but slowly, the things that we bring to Him become more important than His presence. We allow our ‘treasures’ to take priority. The endless list of noble endeavors can steal our attention from the Father. Only a personal and honest conversation with Jehovah can reveal the treasures that have taken His place.
So, how can we prioritize our lives? How can we prepare to stand in His holy place? We seek Him with all our hearts and allow Him to organize our priorities.
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13
Commit daily to His purpose. As you wake, whisper this prayer “God, give me eyes to see what you want me to see today. Give me ears to hear your Spirit guiding my thoughts and actions”. Read His word with purpose. Ask Him to show you what He has for you to learn that day. Pray with purpose. Ask Him to reveal areas in your life that need to be corrected or confessed. Then surrender your will and desires to His. This is the beginning of coming to Him with clean hands and a pure heart. As we seek Him with purpose, listen for Him to speak, and act on His will, He will draw us closer to His holy mountain.
