Did you know?
61% of low income families have no books at all in the home for children.
In middle income neighborhoods, the ratio of books per child is 13:1. In low-income families, the ratio is one age-appropriate book for every 300 children.
Ways to Be Involved
- Support an after-school tutoring ministry, a part of Engage Danville, with much needed books.
- Contact a teacher in your church and discover the needs of their teaching team to help advance literacy.
- Contact a local elementary school library and find out what needs they have. Your church could take up a collection of books, based upon the school’s specific needs. Discover opportunities to volunteer at the school reading to younger students.
- SBC of Virginia churches are reaching into communities and schools to fight poverty and promote literacy. You can help supply age appropriate, Gospel-centered books for these ministries by purchasing: God’s Very Good Idea, The Storm that Stopped, or Alby’s Amazing Book.
Books can be shipped to the SBC of Virginia at: Attn: Mission Projects, 4956 Dominion Blvd, Glen Allen, VA 23060
Spearheaded by SBCV churches, Engage Danville is a strategic annual event where local congregations band together to serve the community and magnify the name of Jesus. Engage Danville is a catalyst event that encourages churches to serve the community throughout the year.
One ministry that continues years-long is a regional emphasis on after school tutoring. There are forty sites around Danville that are actively involved in tutoring youth in partnership with the local church. The tutoring partnership has a goal of creating a community literacy library at each of the forty sites. You are invited to give a book or a book bundle to bless the initiative.
