This blog is part of a series of leadership blogs. In this series, Dolly Mink plans to share some of the lessons she have learned over the course of her life as a leader. Her hope is that you can learn from what she shares and that you can be the leader God has called you to be.
Leading women’s ministry, small groups, or other teams is challenging. We all have deadlines, schedules, and budgets to consider, as well as our commitments at home. Sometimes just keeping up with the calendar is hard enough. How do we find time to invest in the team we lead? Here are four helpful ways to make sure the women on your team feel valued, loved, and led well.
1. Pray
Remember, Jesus was fully God and also fully man. Our Savior retreated from the disciples and prayed regularly. Once the Father had poured into the Son, then He was better able to minister to his followers. We must to remember to spend time with the Lord in prayer and submission so that we can hear from Him, seek His wisdom, and submit to His leadership in our own lives. (Luke 5:16)
2. Plan
As you are praying over your calendar, be intentional about setting aside time for team enrichment. Team retreats are nice, but if there are budget constraints, plan to use your church or your home. Prepare a meal for them, or prepare one together as a team. You don’t have to be extravagant in order to show your team how much you appreciate their devotion and sacrifice. Remember, Jesus encouraged the disciples to retreat and rest after He had sent them out to heal and cast out demons. Your team needs to rest and seek the Father as a team and as individuals. Give members time to retreat alone. (Mark 6:30-32)
3. Play
Yes, play. One of the best things about getting together as a team to have fun is how much closer we grow to each other. Ministry is hard, and we walk through some difficult seasons with the women God has given us the opportunity to serve. Taking time to laugh, play a game, or watch a fun movie or TV show will allow your team to minister to each other. (Proverbs 17:22)
4. Propel
I know most lessons have three points, but this one is important. Hey, at least I alliterated! As a leader, you have a responsibility to grow your team. That can mean reading a book on leadership or ministry strategy together, attending conferences, or even participating in problem-solving exercises.
In addition, periodically discuss doctrinal and theological beliefs so you ensure that your team is in line with Scripture. Your team will grow stronger and you’ll begin to see new leaders emerge; this will both benefit the kingdom and prepare for the day with the Lord calls you to your next assignment. (2 Timothy 2:15)
