Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.” (Ephesians 5:1)
As children, imitating our parents comes very naturally. It is seen in the way we speak and the way we move and act. Those we love and respect are the people we want to be like —be it our parents or others that have made a positive and influential impression on us. We model ourselves by those around us that we admire and hold in high esteem. It has been said, “Imitation is the sincerest/highest form of flattery.”
In this verse, Paul is instructing us to imitate God the Father in His Holiness and righteousness, God the Son, (Christ Jesus) in His self-sacrificing love for His people. All being accomplished by the power of and reliance on the indwelling God the Holy Spirit present in every born-again believer.
Every day as God’s adopted children, we are given an opportunity to imitate the Triune God. We display his transforming work in our lives by giving glory to our creator, sustainer, and savior inhow we live moment by moment, day by day until Christ returns for his bride the church. Today and everyday counts. May we be found as loving children imitating our God.
