On February 12, International Mission Board (IMB) President David Platt shared with IMB field personnel and staff that he would step down as president of the organization to focus his ministry as teaching pastor of McLean Bible Church in McLean, Virginia. However, he will remain IMB President until a successor has been named. He shared that after more than three years at the IMB this was a tough decision that required much prayer and fasting.
SBC of Virginia (SBCV) churches support the IMB through Cooperative Program giving in sending thousands of missionaries around the world to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
“The vision of people of every language, nation, and tribe knowing and worshipping Jesus as Lord has been and continues to be the heartbeat of our International Mission Board because it is our Lord’s vision,” shared Brian Autry, Executive Director of the SBC of Virginia. “SBC of Virginia churches continue to pray, give, go, and send through the powerful partnership of Southern Baptist missions. Our missionaries are not alone and we are committed to unreached peoples knowing that they are not alone!”
Thurman Hayes, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Suffolk, Virginia and current IMB trustee said, “I’m deeply thankful for David Platt’s great leadership, and excited for his future,” Hayes said. “Also excited for our future at IMB. Why? Because we have a great God who is always up to good things!”
Ken McLemore also serves as an IMB trustee and missions pastor at Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia. “I am so grateful to David and his leadership at the IMB,” shared McLemore. “His commitment to mobilize churches to take the Gospel where no witness exists is incredible. I am confident that as he moves on to McLean Bible that he will continue to mobilize churches to go to those people groups with no access to Jesus. As a trustee we are so thankful for prayer as we seek to find God’s person to lead the IMB in the coming years.”
“Thankfully, our organizations are built not upon singular individuals,” Eric Thomas said, Senior Pastor of First Norfolk Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia and SBCV President. “But upon God’s sovereign purpose for us and His mandate to share His Good News.”
“We are appreciative of David Platt and his leadership at the IMB,” Thomas said. “And we pray for those who will begin the search for a new IMB president. We continue to give our support and are very excited about the future of taking the Gospel around the world.”
Autry echoes Thomas, “I am thankful for David’s continued ministry to mobilize Christians for the Great Commission, and confident of the Lord’s hand upon our missionaries being sent by His churches.”
