Today in our prayer time, we will pray for two of our missionaries we’ll call Victor and Madeline. They serve in Chiang Mai, Thailand. But they are there to reach the many Deaf people in that large city. Our church’s Cooperative Program giving helps them serve there.
Victor and Madeline have planted a new church for Deaf people. But they also teach Deaf people to plant new Deaf churches.
When we see translating for the Deaf into sign language, we may assume all sign language is the same. No, there are many types of sign language around the world.
Two local Deaf people, Sombai and Alisara attended a church that provided signed interpretation of messages.
But the church used a slow word-for-word system that was hard for the two to follow. They saw that the Hawhornes use Thai Sign Language to translate the Bible exactly — and they understood. Sombai and Alisara became part of the new church. Then the Hawthornes trained them to go plant a new church for the Deaf.
Let’s pray for Victor and Madeline because we want everyone to hear the gospel — whatever that takes!
