For our missions prayer time, let’s pray for Matthew Knight. We could call him our missionary to the military because he serves as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force. We support Chaplain Knight indirectly through our taxes because his salary comes from the Air Force, of course.
But our North American Mission Board is our agency that approves Southern Baptist chaplains and provides training and support to them. So our church’s Cooperative Program dollars are much involved.
Matthew has a special assignment — senior chaplain for the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations in Dover, Del., part of Dover Air Force Base. When one of our nation’s military is killed in combat, the remains come here. Matthew and his team of chaplains ensure the process is handled with dignity and respect. He walks with soldiers’ families in the most holy of moments.
The team provides care for grieving families who have lost loved ones, but also for the mortuary workers who deal with death daily. Further, the team trains chaplains and mental health professionals on how to best serve grieving families.
As we pray for Matthew today, let’s be thankful that he blesses families with Christ-centered concern when they need it most. Let’s ask God to bless Matthew as he serves there in Dover.
