The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
James 5:16b
The true story about to be told should most certainly begin with: “Once upon a time, in a not-so-far-off land, a baby boy was born.” His parents were entrusted with this tender life, so his mother took care to pray specific virtues over him every night. After all, there could be danger lurking around every bend, so valor was crucial.
If you haven’t guessed by now, this story belongs to my family, and that praying mother was me. I prayed for life, health, protection, and provision, but above all else, a heart for the Lord.
One of my favorite songs at the time was “Somewhere in the World” by Wayne Watson. The lyrics carried me into an imaginary adventure about the little girl God was preparing to be my son’s future wife. It felt like a fairy tale. The song described a little girl growing in a grace that would bless everyone around her. Listening to it, I could almost feel a gentle breeze carrying me to a sunny meadow where she was swinging safely in her daddy’s arms. Then, the scene would shift to her bedside, where she folded her tiny hands and whispered a sweet prayer to the Heavenly Father.
While on this sweet journey, the cadence of the chorus always drew me back to reality: I had no idea who this little girl was, or where she lived. Still, my spirit urged me to lift her up in prayer. The final line of the song grabbed my heart every time, echoing: “Hold onto Jesus, baby, wherever you are.”
That song became my daily prayer. As a young mom, my deep desire was for the Father to choreograph my son’s life so that he would one day meet an unwavering woman of God. Throughout the years, I have prayed similar prayers for all of my children.
What a comfort it is to know that God answered this prayer for my son. Today, I look at my daughter-in-“love,” as she calls it, and I know without a doubt that God was preparing her all along to be a beautiful helpmate. Her own journey was long and rocky, but God protected her through it all, shaping her into a steadfast wife. It is nothing short of a miracle to see how He has woven their two paths together to bring Him honor. Their story didn’t look quite as picture-perfect as the fairy tale I imagined all those years ago, but the Father knew every step. Together, my son and his wife now seek to follow the Lord while training up their own children.
So, what is the purpose of sharing this story? It is to encourage you to make specific requests for your children. The Creator, Elohim, knit our babies together meticulously before we even knew they existed (Psalm 139:13). He cares about them deeply. Come before the Lord with clean hands and a pure heart to ask for good things that will bring Him glory. He truly delights in giving good gifts to His children (Matthew 7:11).
It is incredibly humbling to look back years after those first prayers were spoken and see the evident fruit in my son’s family today. As their story continues, my prayers persist that they may live happily ever after—truly content in their obedience to the Lord.
