On June 24, powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, bringing widespread damage, loss, displacement, and urgent humanitarian need. As of June 29, reports indicate that 1,450 people died, approximately 3,150 were injured, and more than 12,700 people are displaced. Rescue and recovery efforts continue, and these figures are expected to change.
Send Relief—our Southern Baptist disaster-relief partner on both a national and international scale—is partnering with the National Baptist Convention of Venezuela (CNBV) and trusted local partners to help provide emergency food, safe water, shelter, blankets, hygiene supplies, and medical aid—and to share the hope of Christ. Send Relief is requesting financial support, not in-kind donations.
The Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia has strong ties with Venezuelans who live in Virginia and worship in SBCV churches, including several pastors. Many of them have family back in Venezuela. This crisis is personal to many in our own convention family.
At this time, Venezuela is a Level 4 travel-threat environment. National partners are not requesting assistance from U.S. volunteers, and current safety and security concerns make volunteer deployment unlikely. The best way Southern Baptists can respond right now is through prayer and financial support.
Thank you for standing with our brothers and sisters in Venezuela as they bring real help and the life-changing hope of Christ to their neighbors. 100% of funds received through SBCV for this response will be sent directly to Send Relief for the Venezuela earthquake-relief effort.
