We have been at Parkway Baptist in Moseley for almost three years, and one of the most meaningful ministries has been the Parkway Women’s Ministry.
As we have moved up and down the east coast, I have been drawn to women’s ministry in every church we have attended. I first felt the desire to be a part of a women’s ministry team while attending Bellevue Baptist for almost ten years (25,000 members) in Memphis, but as the mom of ten kids and caring for my mother in law as well, I have regularly reminded myself I probably would not have time anyway.
When we moved to Virginia and joined Parkway, ideas for women’s ministry would often flood my mind. Being fairly new, though, I did not feel like I should ask to be on the team, so I would tuck these ideas away in my heart, reciting verses in my mind on waiting on the Lord.
One Sunday morning about two years after we joined, one of the women’s team members asked me if she could talk to me after church. I tried to hide my excitement, as I hoped maybe she was going to ask me to join the team. After the service was over, I could hardly contain myself as she did not just ask me to join it, she asked me to lead it! I told her I would pray about it, already 99% sure of the answer. I called her back the next day with an enthusiastic YES and told her how I felt God had been preparing me for this for many years.
An added blessing is the renewed energy I have felt in caring for my six kids that are still at home along with my mother in law. Like Elijah in I Kings 19, I had been feeling like the “journey is too much”, but just like God told Elijah He had a reserve, God has helped me find part of my reserve by leading the Parkway Women’s Ministry.
I have led the ministry since August of 2014, and it has been wonderful to encourage women while at the same time living out what has been my heart’s desire for well over a decade.
