In the Gospel of Mark, we begin to get a glimpse into the lives of the disciples as they joined Jesus in his ministry. Throughout chapter 2, we see several people begin to question Jesus’ methods and motives. In verse 18, people are noticing that both John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, but Jesus’ were not. Jesus often spoke in metaphors and parables, and his response paints them a clear picture.
Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.”
-Mark 2:19-20
Jesus was physically with the disciples for a short period of time. The disciples were blessed to witness firsthand his miracles and teachings. I don’t believe that the people doubting Jesus’ methods could truly grasp how incredible it was to sit next to the Son of God.
Later in chapter 3, the Pharisees witness Jesus heal a man on the Sabbath. Instead of being amazed and overjoyed for the healing, they began to plot how they would kill Jesus. The Pharisees were so focused on following the Law, that they were missing out on Jesus’ incredible power. In Mark 3:5 it says that Jesus was “deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts.” My hope for myself and other believers is that we don’t miss out on God’s blessings. I pray that God gives me the humility to know that even when I don’t understand what God is doing, I know that ultimately, it is for our good.
