Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
-Psalm 147:5 ESV
I’ve stood at the ocean and marveled at the vastness of it. I’ve looked to the horizon in wonder of how far I could see. I’ve watched in awe as the waves rolled in and the sand shifted underneath them. I realize, though, that the ocean has limits. As vast and powerful and mighty as the ocean is, it does not go on forever. It has boundaries. It is not infinite in its breadth or its depth.
Not so with God. He is infinite in every aspect of His being. Unlike the ocean, He has no limits or boundaries. If He did, He would not be God. If any of His attributes had boundaries or limits, it would put a limit on His whole being.
We read in Psalm 147 that God’s understanding is beyond measure. It is infinite. If that is true for God’s understanding, then it is true for all of His attributes and characteristics. No attribute of God can outweigh another. He possesses every one of His characteristics equally at all times. Thus, we can say that every one of His attributes and characteristics are infinite.
What a comfort it is to know that God is infinite. What a comfort to know that there are no limits to His attributes and characteristics. His mercy has no end. His grace goes beyond anything we can imagine. He does not give His love only to a certain degree.
Whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, whatever we are struggling with, God is there with His infinite love, mercy, and grace. When we are facing life-changing decisions and we don’t know what to do, God is there with His limitless wisdom and understanding. He’s there with His justice that knows no bounds when we are being taken advantage of or facing betrayal.
The people in our lives may let us down, but God will always be faithful to us. There is no limit to His faithfulness. Our circumstances might be hard, but our God never stops being good. His goodness has no bounds. God’s justice will always prevail because there will never be an end to it. There never comes a point when God’s forgiveness runs out. We will never commit one sin too many. His forgiveness has no boundaries and thus, He is always ready to forgive.
Our God is sovereign over all things. There is not one iota of something not under His control. It may feel like the world is spinning out of control, but God is still on His throne. He is and always will be sovereign over all things. His sovereignty is limitless.
What aspect of God’s infinitude do you need to cling to today? What infinite characteristic do you need to trust in knowing it will never run out? Limits and boundaries may constrain everything in this world. Nothing constrains or limits God.
