I recently finished my freshmen year of college. I am majoring in Christian Leadership and Church Ministries with a cognate in Women’s Leadership. While in high school, I served as an intern with Women’s Ministry. This summer I was given the opportunity to serve as an intern in Student Ministry. Each experience gave me valuable hands-on experience, a deeper understanding of the varying roles of church leadership, and an appreciation for the importance of offering internship programs for young people within the local church. With that in mind, here are a few things I’ve personally taken away from my internship experiences:
- Internships benefit the intern
Internships give those interested in pursuing vocational ministry an opportunity to discern and distinguish their calling through hands-on experiences in the different facets of ministry. Personal development in the areas of leadership, problem-solving, communication, and team building are skills essential to the successful operation of the church, and interning within a local church gives students an opportunity to hone those skills. One of the most impactful elements of an internship is mentorship. Interns are able to observe the role of ministry leaders firsthand – from the event planning and ministry programming to the spiritual elements and discipleship. My internships gave me a deep appreciation for the leadership of the church and for what happens behind the scenes.
- Internships benefit church leadership
Interns are the future of church leadership, so existing church leaders play an important role in raising up the next generation of ministry workers. In addition, interns are eager to learn, to share fresh perspectives, and to contribute productively to the church while discerning their specific calling within the church.
- Internships benefit the Body of Christ
Interns bridge the gap between church leaders and the people they are leading. The Body of Christ recognizes when young people are eager and willing to serve. Seeing a young adult pursue ministry and serve as an intern can be an encouragement to older generations and inspiration to younger generations.
